CCTV Van

RVC designed and built this specialist mobile CCTV vehicle for Devon & Cornwall Police, supporting their Safer Streets initiative in Plymouth.

Based on a commercial van platform, the vehicle was transformed into a fully equipped mobile surveillance and control environment, designed to provide a highly visible police presence while giving officers the technology and facilities required to monitor incidents and areas of concern from the field.

The rear of the vehicle incorporates two dedicated operator workstations, integrated CCTV control and recording equipment and multiple internal displays, creating a practical working environment for extended deployments.

A 6-metre pneumatic mast carries a high-specification CCTV camera, supported by an additional roof-mounted camera and multiple cameras positioned around the exterior of the vehicle to provide comprehensive coverage of the surrounding area.

To allow the vehicle to operate independently for extended periods, RVC installed a substantial auxiliary electrical system incorporating three 300Ah lithium batteries, a 3kW inverter, solar charging and shoreline charging with automatic disconnect. This provides reliable power for the vehicle's surveillance, IT and ancillary systems without relying on the vehicle engine throughout deployment.

Operator comfort was also an important part of the design. The workspace was fully insulated and sound-deadened and equipped with dedicated air conditioning and thermostatically controlled diesel heating, allowing the vehicle to remain operational throughout the year.

The finished vehicle provides Devon & Cornwall Police with a highly capable, self-contained mobile CCTV platform that combines surveillance, communications, power management and a practical working environment within a single vehicle.
